Marathons
Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, says about Marathons. The marathon is a long-distance running event with an official distance of 42.195 kilometers (26 miles 385 yards) that is usually run as a road race. The event is named after the fabled run of the Greek soldier Pheidippides, a messenger from the Battle of Marathon to Athens. It was one of the original Olympic events in 1896, though the distance did not become standardized until 1921. More than 800 marathons are contested throughout the world each year, with the vast majority of competitors being recreational athletes.
Recreational athletes..? I am over weight, over fifty and have never knowingly taken recreational drugs... well apart from alcohol, all right, coffee, tea, Monosodium Glutamate...
I do love a good run and having met up with Rene (75 years young) on my first London Marathon I am determined to keep on running. Especially as I only caught up with her after 13 miles. If I can finish a marathon when I am 75, I will feel like I've got a few more years left in me for a gradual and healthy slow down...
