Charities
The Food Bank is a ground-breaking concept designed to help individuals and families in crisis by providing free emergency food until the appropriate agencies are in a position to assist.
Tinned and dried food is collected from the public at supermarkets, churches, schools and other local groups and "banked" in a warehouse.
Food is then given to people in crisis as a result of referrals from registered care professionals such as Social Services, Health Visitors, and other carers working in the front line.
On May 3rd 2000 12 year old Alfred 'Podge' Page was turned into a human torch. Drenched in petrol and set alight, he suffered third degree burns over 60% of his body. Rushed to hospital he was given only a 40% chance of survival.
